The Magic Colon

As you may have guessed from the lack of posts on my blog lately, I’m gearing up for another semester of teaching. This semester, I’m trying to put together a few mini-lessons on writing for an online section of ENG 101 that I picked up at the last minute. Here’s a lesson on effective titles that I’ve been working on for the past couple of days. With any luck, I’ll get better with practice and start knocking these out a little more quickly!

Love this! A great idea, really well executed. Can’t wait for the rest. Hope you’ll also keep us posted on how they work for you.

      Good one!

      1. Though I jest, I am quite impressed.

        Great presentation, Marc!

  4. The titles to my blog posts are usually not that good, so even though this is for essays I will add a magic colon to every title from now on. I might add six for good measure…starting with Friday’s post. I wish I was in one of your classes.

If a cow can have four stomachs, there’s no reason you can’t have six colons… Glad you liked the post!

  5. That was really good, Marc! Could I use this?

I love this! I wish there were more Marc Schusters teaching. In today’s world, young people’s brains come pre-wired and techno enhanced, and sometimes the old-fashion way doesn’t get the point across anymore, but this is genius!

This is great! I kind of wish I had come up with this, as I don’t feel right stealing it for my own class. 😛 Great idea though, Marc!

  10. If I had someone like you as a teacher when i was in school, I may have learned how to write. Did you create the graphics too? They are just as great as the lesson.

Thanks, Mom! I created most of the graphics, but the brain is a piece of public domain clip art.

  11. Dear Marc,
That was a great piece of work. So liked it. and yes of course, if only most of us if not all of us had great thinker professors like you, learning like teaching would have been more fun. So glad I stumbled across your blog. Keep them coming dear blog-mate. 🙂

  12. lucky students for the ‘in’…and very clever, for now you are at least guaranteed a few papers with terribly clever titles (hopefully the content will back ’em up). ~

      Hopefully it will!

  13. Excellent! And won’t having a clear title also help focus the writing too?
