The Rats Have Come Home to Roost

Let’s just call this a coincidence: A couple of months ago, I released a song called “I Don’t Bleed,” which included a line about rats living in walls–and now I have rats living in my walls.

I kind of feel like I’m getting what I deserve with this one.

The line about the rats is mean-spirited and supercilious: “I’ll be the rats living in your walls./I’ll be the voice laughing down the hall.”

Clearly the individual uttering these words is looking down on someone and laughing. It’s kind of a dick-move, even for an imaginary character who was born with a tail in ’79, as the song goes.

In any case, the song came out in mid-September, and by October, I was starting to hear some noises. It was easy enough at first to dismiss them as the house settling or the ancient plaster in our walls drying out and crumbling, but by now, it’s clear that we have critters.

Kind of makes me with I’d written a song about finding a sack of gold doubloons or petting a unicorn.

On the other hand, I’ve been working on a song called “Best Day of the Year,” so things might turn around when that one comes out.

  1. Wow, that’s a remarkable story, Marc. Keeping fingers crossed about getting rid of these critters. And, yes, do a few more “Best Day of the Year” type songs. Perhaps that will do the trick!

Optimism! That’s the word for 2024!

      1. Yes, we need lots of it!

  2. Oh my, a strange and foreboding coincidence indeed! And we started having rats appear in our yard over the past couple of months, one of which we found drowned in our pool. It’s the beginning of the apocalypse I tell ya!
