Not many musicians would respond to an interview in Morse Code, but Scronky of Log Flume did! The band is a power pop band out of Chester County, Pennsylvania, known for their catchy melodies and heartfelt, true-to-form power pop style with occasional punk flair. Brendan and Paul (guitars, vocals) met Scronky (bass, vocals, Morse Code) and Gabe (drums, vocals) in early 2023, bonding over their shared interest in jangly guitars and sweet melodies. Since then, Log Flume has packed notable Philadelphia venues such as Ortlieb’s, The Grape Room, and Haus of Yarga. Additionally, the group has played to audiences outside the Philly circuit with past stops in Long Island, New York, Salisbury, Maryland, Newark, Delaware, and Harrisonburg, Virginia.

Log Flume got together in 2023. How did it happen?

Brendan: Right place right time! I had a project that I felt was kind of coming to an end in early 2023. I was writing and listening to a lot of power pop music that didn’t really fit with what that band was. I didn’t really know anyone else that was into that kinda music though, so the songs were just lying around for awhile.

One of my favorite power pop bands ever is 2nd Grade and I was going to see them whenever they played around Philly. Paul (lead guitar for log flume) and I went to one of their shows at Philamoca and we happened to meet Scronky and Gabe there. We got to talking music and I was psyched to meet more power pop fans. Turns out Gabe is an awesome drummer and Scronky is an awesome bass player – it was too perfect not to start a band!

What drew everyone in the band together?

Gabe: Ultimately, our personalities mesh really well. We’re all pretty silly in our own unique ways wherein one complements the other and vice versa. And it’s reflected in the music, especially so when the record segues from one writer to the next. We also share similar goals and aspirations as far as logistics; venues we want to play, release strategies, local bands with which to share bills, etc.

Do you have any shared musical touchstones? 

Gabe: Our shared musical tastes for sure. It’s a big, perpetual soup of artists and albums from the 60s onwards, leaning heavily to the melodic side of things. We’ve learned about so much new music from each other. Each of us have been in bands around Philly as well and the experience from that has helped us shape what we want to accomplish as Log Flume.

Your press materials describe the music of Log Flume as power pop “with the occasional punk flair.” What to you are the hallmarks of power pop? 

Brendan: Deciding what is and isn’t power pop is one of the most beloved pastimes of the genre. To me it’s hard to define what’s “power pop” and “power pop adjacent”. I think the hallmarks are obsession with catchy melodies, guitar focused arrangements, and no fat in the songwriting. A lot of times this makes for some really short songs, like under 2 minutes. Generally the songs also have a fun and innocent quality.

Gabe: Energy and volume. It’s a two-way street between those factors, one coming to fruition with the other. Take a song like “Sugar Sugar”, give it louder amplification and harder playing from the band and boom, you’ve got power! There’s also a certain dryness to the mix- the instruments and the playing do all the talking. Power pop’s a fairly cut and dry concept from my understanding, but it’s a fabulous sound. To my ears, pop never has more conviction than with those characteristics.

Brendan: That’s on me. I can’t stop listening to egg punk and I love the Ramones.

You’ve played a number of venues throughout the Philadelphia area. Do any shows in particular stand out in your memory?

Brendan: The Grape Room shows were always great. We even got to play with 2nd Grade there which was a cool full circle moment. I miss it! 

Gabe: Several! I will echo Brendan and say our show with 2nd Grade at The Grape Room was a big moment for us. Sharing a bill with them was one of our goals from the onset. We’ve also played two shows at Haus of Yarga, memorable purely for the nature of that venue. Going there puts some hair on your chest y’ know!

You’ve also gone a little further afield, playing in, among other places, Long Island, New York, and Harrisonburg, Virginia. What were the circumstances of those shows? How did they come about?  Were they part of a tour, or one-offs? 

Brendan: I went to school down in Harrisonburg VA and they have a legendary DIY house called Crayola that’s been a house venue for like 30 years. Sadly this was the last year of it being a show house, and I really wanted to play it before it went. Luckily we got down there in March and it was maybe our best show! Such a great place and I’m so bummed it’s gone. 

Outside of that generally we’ve been just doing one off out of town shows where we drive up and back the same day. I like doing that since you don’t have to figure out a place to stay and all that, but hoping we can do some longer runs soon!

Gabe: Our good friend Mikey is a member of the band 4F and the Long Island show was their extremely generous invite. As for Virginia, we didn’t think we’d get to play Crayola! Brendan went to JMU and knows how special that venue was. A house venue in business for three decades is a true anomaly. Anyway, Brendan reached out simply to see if there was an opportunity to play before its subsequent closure this year, and we truly lucked out. One of the best crowds we’ve ever played for.

Your first single was titled “DB Cooper.” What attracts you to him as a metaphor?

Brendan: Every once in awhile I write an escapism song and this one I actually liked enough to keep around. I just think the DB Cooper story is so funny and I guess it was on my mind at that time. I’m really happy with how this song turned out, everyone really added a lot to the original demo. Scronk’s walking bassline on the chorus, Gabe’s crazy ride cymbal work, and Paul’s riffage – it’s great!

Can you talk a little bit about recording the album Splash Hit? 

Brendan: I’ve got a pretty decent recording setup in my basement, so we recorded the whole album down there. We recorded it over a few months with everyone coming over to lay down a part here and there until it was done. It took a long time but it was nice to have the flexibility to redo stuff whenever.

I love the artwork on your releases. Who does it? 

Gabe: I make collage art in my free time and it makes great artwork for releases, especially with elements from 60s and 70s books and magazines. The album art is a Scronky creation we’re super happy about!

What’s next for the band?

Gabe: We’ve got physical copies of our debut coming in the foreseeable future. Everyone’s always working on new songs as well. We’re excited to keep the ball rolling!
