Hi, friends! A little while back I posted about a demo I recorded in the wake of the election. The song is called “Hole in the Boat,” and my favorite line is “Times like this, all we have is each other.” And though it’s sometimes difficult to find an “each other” in today’s world, I’m incredibly fortunate to have found a community of like-minded musicians to help me out with a fuller recording of the song.
The first couple of folks to volunteer were my buddies Jim Lorino and Nick Cervini from Scoopski. You can hear Jim at the beginning of the track doing a sound check and then at the end on backing vocals. Nick is playing drums throughout, and he also contributed the cool electronic beat that shows up just before the final chorus. To me, it sounds like an old engine trying to keep chugging along.
Another musician to join in was Samantha Goodman of Rescue Pets. I was listening to their music a couple of weeks ago as I was working on some interview questions, and I immediately thought her voice would sound great on the song. Sam’s voice really stands out on the last “Engine sputters!” just before the chorus.
I also reached out to Brian Lambert and Quizboy, who have each been a massive part of my musical life over the past few years despite living on the other side of the country. They both contributed backing vocals, and I looped Brian singing “Engine sputters!” into the final chorus.
I even sent a missive across the border to Jaimee Jacobczak, aka Neither Could Dylan. Jaimee contributed vocals to the project, and you can hear her laughing at the very end. Jaimee lives in Ontario, so there’s a decent chance that the rest of us will all be seeking refuge at her place sometime over the next four years.
Despite the circumstances, I love the way this song turned it out, and I’m incredibly grateful to all of my friends for helping me with it. If you haven’t done so already, please be sure to check them out… Their music is amazing!

Thanks, Chris! I’m glad you like it!
A melancholy but hopeful song, Marc, which nicely expresses our collective emotions at this troubling time. I especially like the harmonies provided by a diverse collection of vocal styles.
Thanks, Jeff! I’m counting my blessings wherever I can find them these days, and my friends in music (yourself included!) are some of the brightest sides I can find!
