Plush Gordon: Stayin’ Alive?

Quite a while back, I was releasing music under the name Plush Gordon. It was kind of a band, kind of a solo project, kind of a thing where whoever was playing with me was part of the band even though it was really just my music. Then I shifted into another project with my cousin Vince called The Ministry of Plausible Rumours. That was mostly a COVID lockdown project, but Vince got in touch with me about a year ago, maybe, and said he wanted to record a cover of, if I remember correctly, “The Air That I Breathe” by the Hollies, and I countered with “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees. But with lockdowns thankfully over, we were both busy with work and other projects, so it never happened.

But I had what I thought was an interesting idea for “Stayin’ Alive,” so I recorded it on my own. It’s a deadpan, minimalist, synth-driven version of the song that doesn’t quite fit with a lot of the music I’ve been releasing under my own name, so I decided to release it as a Plush Gordon track. It comes out on November 3 or thereabouts, but you can pre-save it now if you’re so inclined by clicking on the image below.

  1. Cool, Marc, you’re truly a man of many talents! Plush Gorden is a clever name that made me think of “Flash Gordon” and Queen’s ‘Flash’ right away, even though I’ve never seen the film and only know of it because of the Queen song.

I’m probably part of the minority of rock fans who dig the Bee Gees and their “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack album, which of course opens with “Stayin’ Alive.” Looking forward to your take.

You’ll be in great company: According to SecondHandSongs.com, there are currently more than 250 cover versions of that song. One that caught my attention is this cool hard rock rendition by Dweezil Zappa:

    1. Thanks, Christian… The original is definitely a cool song, and I find it impossible not to move my feet when I’m listening to it!

      1. I always can’t help it and every time I hear that song see John Travolta “walking in rhythm” through Queens! 😆

      2. Me too!
