Things Are Better If We Work Together: A Quick Word with Tim Eveleigh

Last time I spoke with Tim Eveleigh, he had just released his debut album, A Record. Now he’s out with a follow-up called Life Is Not a Competition.

Your new record is called Life Is Not a Competition. Why do you think that’s something people need a reminder for?

I hope most people won’t and that it’s a reminder for me as much as anything – but, having said that, in the UK we have had politicians (and others) talking about a ‘Global Race’ and I don’t think that it exists. I think things are better if we work together – both locally and globally – (rather than working against each other) and so I’d like to encourage us to do that.

How does the music on Life Is Not a Competition build on the music from your first album, A Record?

I hope the arrangements are more complex. Having said that – the songs were written at about the same time as those on ‘A Record’ and we started working on this album first, then stopped to make ‘A Record’ – then went back to this one. So I could be wrong!

Are you taking the new album on the road and performing it live?

I hope so. It will absolutely depend on whether promoters would like me to play at their venues – but if they do I’ll be there!

Last time we talked, you mentioned the relationship between your musical output and your standup comedy. Are the two still informing each other?

I think so. I have been concentrating on music rather than comedy this year but I have still attempted to be funny in appropriate situations.

What do you have planned for the future?

I have written some more songs so I hope to do more recording. While making ‘A Record’ we briefly stopped in order to make an EP called ‘In Kilnsea’ that contained a new song, an old song and a cover version (so – something old, something new, something borrowed…). I think more of those would be good.

  1. You’re the second blogger I follow, who covered Tim Eveleigh’s new album. I need to carve out some time to listen to it more closely. I’ve been “all-consumed” by The Beatles Anthology!😀

    1. I like to think I’m OK – but I’m not The Beatles!
