It’s always cool to get new music in my in-box, and this morning I was very pleased to see something new from a longtime favorite of mine, The La-La-Lettes, who are back with at double-sided single called “Jahaira (Parts 1 and 2).” What’s really striking about the juxtaposition of these two parts is the difference in the mix.
Part one feels like an overhead conversation or standing outside of a club — or down a long hallway from an empty club where the DJ is just setting up. There’s a lot of reverb on the track that gives the proceedings a haunting dreamy feel. A whistling motif gives way to fragments of a monologue in Spanish, and a trumpet line at around takes the piece to a whole new level with shades of Pet Shop Boys.
Part two is an instrumental version mixed by Kelly Kintner. Same vibe, different approach. This one is slick and would feel right at home playing overhead at a cool coffee shop in Paris or Barcelona. Or on the soundtrack of an indie movie in the late 80s. Listen for a cool wobble at around 3:32 where Kintner briefly slows the “tape” and brings it back up to speed.
Cool groove all around. This one has my day off to an excellent start!
